Tales of the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons "Parade of Hope and Fortune"

Once upon a time, in a small, remote mountain village, there was a legend that a parade of hundred demons would pass by every late summer. These supernatural beings, known as "yokai(妖怪)" in Japanese folklore, were feared and loathed by the villagers.

One year, when Taro was returning home, night had already fallen. At that time, he happened to come across the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. At first, Taro was paralyzed by fear, but gradually he was captivated by the mysterious atmosphere.

Taro mustered his courage, bowed deeply to the monsters, and prayed earnestly to them to bring good fortune to the village. To his surprise, one of the monsters stepped out of the procession, approached Taro, and with a smile handed him a small scroll.

"In this scroll is written the secret to making the village prosper. I am impressed by your honesty and courage, so I entrust this to you," said the yokai(妖怪). Then the yokai(妖怪) returned to their procession, and the parade of one hundred demons disappeared into the darkness.

Taro returned to the village and shared the scroll with the villagers. It contained detailed instructions on how to grow crops and use the land effectively. The villagers followed the instructions, worked diligently, and enjoyed a good harvest the following year. Merchants and travelers began to visit the village, bringing prosperity to the village.

Since then, the village has held a festival every year during the Hyakki Yagyou(百鬼夜行)  period to show its gratitude and welcome the monsters back. Taro's respect for the monsters transformed their fear into hope. The good fortune that Taro brought to the village has become a legend passed down through generations.

Designing Harmony: Where Humans and Animals Shape Life Together

Haruki is a Tokyo-based freelance illustrator whose work centers on the theme of "life design nurtured by humans and animals." From a young age, she had a deep love for drawing, and it was in her second year of high school that she decided to seriously pursue art. She began formal training at an art prep school, where she learned the foundations of drawing, color theory, art, and design. Since launching her freelance career in 2023, Haruki has become known for her vibrant depictions of animals, her beautiful use of color, and the calming effect her illustrations have on viewers. Her work has been featured in picture books and promotional advertisements, earning her a growing recognition.

My journey with ukiyo-e began when I first saw Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s work, The Great Japanese Generals: Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. As a high school student, I was deeply moved by the delicate details and the bold, contrasting colors. That moment sparked my fascination with ukiyo-e. I was captivated by Katsushika Hokusai’s mastery of space, Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s creative genius, and his ability to make his work relatable to everyone, as well as Yoshitoshi’s daring color compositions. Ukiyo-e spans a wide range of genres, from ancient legends and heroic tales to everyday life. For my current project, I chose to explore the theme of yokai, the supernatural beings of Japanese folklore. Many great ukiyo-e artists before me have explored this genre, and I sought to draw inspiration from these masters while creating a world of my own. I hope my work resonates with you on a personal level.
